The Cause: Defrost System Failure. In Whirlpool frost-free refrigerators, a single cooling coil in the freezer chills both compartments. Cold air is pushed downwards by a small motorized fan through an air duct damper. Every 8 hours, a defrost heater melts natural frost off the coils. If the defrost timer, bimetal thermostat, or thermal fuse burns out, a solid block of ice forms over the coils, suffocating airflow to the bottom compartment.
Solution: The appliance must be checked for heater continuity, and the defective bimetal sensor or timer replaced.
Symptom 2: Clicking Sound from the Back of the Fridge Every 2-3 Minutes
If you hear a distinct metallic "click... hum... click" coming from the bottom rear of your refrigerator, your compressor is attempting to start but failing.
The Cause: Burnt PTC Starter Relay or Overload Protector (OLP). Voltage surges in Mumbai residential grids can overheat the ceramic disc inside the starter relay. When the relay fails, power surges through the compressor windings until the safety overload clicks off to prevent motor burnout.
Solution: Replacing the PTC starter relay costs a fraction of a new compressor and solves the issue 90% of the time.
Symptom 3: Compressor Runs Continuously But No Cooling Anywhere
If both the freezer and bottom compartment are room temperature while the compressor hums non-stop, the refrigeration sealed system has lost its refrigerant charge (R600a or R134a) due to a copper corrosion pinhole leak or capillary choke.
Quick Checklist Before Calling a Technician:
1. Ensure at least 4 inches of clearance between the back of the fridge and your kitchen wall for hot air exhaust.
2. Check that the door rubber gasket forms an airtight magnetic seal (test with a paper currency note).
3. Clean dust and pet hair from the bottom condenser coils using a dry brush.
